Tree planting done right

22.06.2022

The local farmers benefit from the tree planting projects.

As we all work together to help the environment, BIG KAISER wanted to do something that would support the drive towards net zero, but that was more than just planting trees.

We decided to work with Treedom, which is the world’s first platform that enables you to plant a tree from a distance and follow the story of the project online.

Every tree managed by Treedom is geolocated, photographed and has its own online page on treedom.net. All of BIG KAISER’s trees can be seen on Treedom’s website here – so far, they’re in Tanzania, Guatemala, Madagascar, Cameroon and Kenya.

Since Treedom's foundation in 2010, more than 3 million trees have been planted across Africa, South America and Europe. All trees are planted directly by local farmers, bringing environmental, social and financial benefits to their communities.

Treedom is not just about capturing CO2, it’s also managing the trees as part of agroforestry systems. This means the trees are cultivated and produce useful crops such as bananas, mangoes and cocoa, which can help provide an income for local people. The trees can also contribute to reforestation, which can combat soil erosion and preserve biodiversity.

We want to involve our employees, business partners and customers in the Treedom project. It’s early days, but so far BIG KAISER has bought 200 trees from Treedom. We’re giving the first 110 trees to employees, and the rest to our partners and clients. Every recipient will be able to click on a personalised link to see a photo of their tree and check on its progress.

So, how much CO2 are our trees capturing? On Treedom's website, you can calculate how much CO2 you emit in your day and compare it with the CO2 captured by your trees.

For the trees being planted for BIG KAISER, each tree will capture an estimated average 225kg of CO2 each year. For the 200 trees in our first year in the project, that’s a total of 45 tonnes of CO2 being captured. And of course, the trees will keep absorbing CO2 for many years and each year we are planting more.

This is a long-term project – we plan to work with Treedom for at least the next years. Every year, we will buy a minimum of 200 trees. If we don't gift them, they will be planted anyway.

Climate change is a huge problem, but by working together, we can all help reduce its impact. Treedom is going to help BIG KAISER do our share.
